OFTEC’s Competent Person Scheme – reasons to register

If you are a heating technician it is essential that customers can rely on your expertise. Joining OFTEC’s Competent Person Scheme demonstrates that your work reaches the required standards which will provide reassurance to both existing and potential customers.

Completing your competent person training will enable your business to grow and compete with other heating technicians. OFTEC registration also brings other benefits including being able to self-certify your own work, which will save you time and money, free listing on OFTEC’s online database and discounts for both insurance schemes and our online store.

A technician who is part of a Competent Person Scheme can self-certify that the work they have carried out meets local building standards and regulation. The scheme was created by the government to achieve higher standards in the industry and competent person training schemes must be recognised by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The OFTEC registration programme is Government approved in Great Britain, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Who can register as a competent person?

To register with the OFTEC Competent Person Scheme technicians must complete an OFTEC approved training course which includes an assessment. Once technicians have completed their OFTEC registration, they will be regularly inspected to ensure they are maintaining the required high standards set out in the competent person training.

The three main areas of the OFTEC scheme are:

Oil – This covers several different types of installation including oil combustion appliances and oil tanks. OFTEC has approved training centres across the country where you can be assessed. This will include both practical and written tests.

Solid Fuel – By completing this training you will be able to carry out the installation of solid fuel burners and solid fuel appliances. Technicians must have a solid fuel installation qualification that has been recognised and achieved in the last four years.

Renewables
– This includes the supply and installation of both Solar Thermal and Heat Pump systems. For more information on the necessary qualifications please contact the OFTEC registrations team.

OFTEC also offers extensions of registration including:

Non-operative oil registration – If you work in the heating industry but not on site this will allow you to enjoy the benefits of OFTEC registration, such as discounts for OFTEC Direct, but you will not be able to self-certify your work.

Electrical Part P registration – The majority of fixed electrical installations must meet Part P of Building Regulations by law. This registration scheme enables technicians to self-certify electrical installations.

PAS 2030 registration – This is required for technicians looking for Energy Company Obligation or regionally funded work.

MCS renewables registration – This optional registration will allow customers to claim payments from the Renewable Heat Incentive Government scheme. Technicians who apply for MCS renewables registration through OFTEC are required to have the relevant competent person registration.

Advantages of registration

There are numerous advantages for heating technicians who register with OFTEC. The most important is proof of your competence and you will have a certificate, badge and logo to show to customers. Being OFTEC registered also means you can self-certify your work which will save you time and your customers money as they will not have to pay building inspection fees.

Once you are fully registered you will be added to our online database of approved technicians. This means customers who search for an OFTEC technician will find you and it is a valuable way of gaining new business.

Finally, you will be entitled to a range of support from OFTEC including technical support with free updates to OFTEC technical publications, discounts on the OFTEC Direct store and insurance schemes and a free magazine every quarter discussing the biggest stories in the heating industry.
